SAMBO included in Olympics Los Angeles 2028
Dalil Scalli, President of the African SAMBO Confederation, issued this comment on the eve of the start of the African SAMBO Championships in Cairo (Egypt).
"I am 80% certain that SAMBO will be included in the Olympics in Los Angeles (USA) in 2028." If the decision is favourable, this might happen as early as 2024 in Paris as a demonstration sport, according to the FIAS Vice President. - Unfortunately, the Parisian programme has already been established, so our chances are slim. If the Summer Olympic Games were hosted in Russia or one of the former Soviet republics, I am confident that SAMBO would be included in the Olympic programme, given the high degree of development of this sport in these nations."
He further emphasised the necessity and significance of FIAS's permanent recognition of the IOC. "We worked on this for a long time and have come a long way." In many ways, this triumph was made possible by the efforts of FIAS President Vasily Shestakov, who took over the organisation in 2009. We were able to achieve interim recognition in 2018, thanks to the combined efforts of continental and national federations, as well as the FIAS apparatus, and it is now permanent. "After three years of hard work, the dream has finally come true," Dalil Scalli remarked.
"Ahead of all of us is waiting for another breakthrough in the development of SAMBO," the African SAMBO Confederation's president is certain.
