BJJ vs. SAMBO: Which Martial Art Is More Effective?
You have probably heard of BJJ and SAMBO, regardless of whether you are interested in grappling or not. These are the top two grappling disciplines, both of which are extremely useful in competitive sports. However, in terms of BJJ versus SAMBO, which one is superior, and why is that so?
The art of hand-to-hand combat known as sambo was developed in Russia and used by the Russian military. It combines striking, grappling, and ground fighting techniques. It is essentially an abbreviation that was developed from the Russian phrase "SAMozashchita Bez Oruzhiya," which translates to "self-defense without weapons." The word "SAMBO" comes from this phrase.
It is a forceful and adaptable technique that places an emphasis on powerful throws and lightning quick submissions.
BJJ, also known as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, is a form of martial arts that originated in Brazil and was established by the Gracie family. It is becoming a common system utilised in mixed martial arts competitions despite having less versatility than sambo.
Is this evidence sufficient to conclude that SAMBO is superior?
What is SAMBO?
SAMBO is a form of martial arts that was initially developed in the 1920s by the Russian military with the intention of enhancing the hand-to-hand combat skills of its service members. The culmination of their labour was the creation of a combat system that had its roots in a variety of different martial arts, including boxing, wrestling, jiu-jitsu, and Judo.
There are two primary variations of SAMBO practised in today's world:
Sports SAMBO - The sport of Sport SAMBO is quite comparable to Judo. The focus is placed on strong standing throws and joint locks such as arm bars and leg locks. Both choking and striking are prohibited in this match.
Combat SAMBO - is a more adaptable type of martial arts that, in many respects, is comparable to mixed martial arts (MMA) fighting. Combatants have the ability to strike their opponents with kicks, punches, knees, and elbows, as well as combine these strikes with throws, takedowns, and joint locks. In addition to that, Combat SAMBO incorporates filthy moves such as headbutts and football kicks into the mix. But it goes without saying that you can't use any of these manoeuvres in real MMA bouts.
In the days when the USSR was still around, sambo was a popular sport. Sambo did not begin to gain international prominence until the 1960s, when Soviet sambists began to dominate at international judo championships. Prior to that, it remained confined to the countries that were located behind the Iron Curtain for more than 30 years.
Since then, its notoriety has increased, mostly as a result of the achievements of its exponents, Khabib Nurmagomedov and Islam Makhachev, on the world stage as champions of the lightweight division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship.
However, in contrast to BJJ, SAMBO is still considered to be a rather obscure kind of martial art outside of the former Soviet Union.
