Frequently asked questions
What BJJ gear do I need to start training?
Beginners need a BJJ gi (also called a kimono), a white belt, and a rash guard for under the gi or for no-gi training. Shorts and a mouth guard are also recommended. Most clubs will lend you a gi for your first class before you buy your own.
What size BJJ gi should I buy?
BJJ gi sizing is brand-specific but most use a letter and number system (A0 to A6 for adults, M0 to M4 for youth). Choose based on your height first, then adjust for weight. Most brands include a size chart in their product listings. When in doubt, size up as gis shrink slightly after washing.
What is the difference between a competition gi and a training gi?
Competition gis meet IBJJF specifications: the jacket must be a single or double weave in white, blue, or black; the collar must not exceed 1.3 cm in width and 1 cm in thickness. Training gis are less restricted and come in a wider range of weaves and colours. For beginners, a mid-weight training gi is the best value.
