Choosing the Right Karate Gi (Uniform)

Your karate gi is your most essential piece of equipment. We offer a range for all purposes:

      • Student Gis: Lightweight and comfortable, perfect for beginners and kids, allowing for a full range of motion during training.
      • Kata Gis: Heavier and crisper, designed to give that signature 'snap' sound during forms practice, ideal for demonstrations and competitions.
      • Kumite Gis: Ultra-lightweight and breathable, engineered for speed and agility during sparring. Many of our options are WKF (World Karate Federation) approved.

Be sure to consult our sizing charts on each product page to find the perfect fit.

      Essential Sparring & Protective Gear

Safety is paramount in karate. Equip yourself for kumite with our range of protective gear, including hand mitts, shin and instep guards, mouthguards, and headgear. We stock reliable brands to ensure you can train and compete with confidence.

      Frequently Asked Questions

For your first class, you will typically only need a beginner's karate uniform, known as a 'gi', which includes a jacket, pants, and a white belt. As you progress to sparring (kumite), you will need protective gear. Always check with your specific dojo or instructor for their requirements.

Karate gi sizing is primarily based on height. Each of our product pages features a detailed sizing chart to help you select the correct size. If you are between sizes, we generally recommend choosing the larger size, as traditional cotton gis can experience minor shrinkage after the first wash.

A Kata gi is made from heavy canvas-like cotton. It is stiffer and designed to create a loud 'snap' sound during techniques, which is favoured in kata (forms) competition. A Kumite gi is much lighter and made from breathable materials to allow for maximum speed and mobility during sparring.

Essential sparring gear, or kumite gear, typically includes hand mitts (gloves), shin and instep guards, and a mouthguard. Groin guards are mandatory for males. Depending on your club or competition rules, headgear and chest protectors may also be required.
