Khabib's Fighting Style Explained: Dagestani Sambo, Wrestling and Why No One Could Stop the Takedown
Khabib Nurmagomedov's fighting style is built on Dagestani combat sambo and freestyle wrestling: a system of clinch control, body-lock takedowns, cage pressure, and relentless top control that no opponent across 29 professional fights was able to stop. Understanding how it works explains why the system is studied by grapplers at every level of the sport.

Who is Khabib Nurmagomedov?
Khabib Abdulmanapovich Nurmagomedov was born on 20 September 1988 in the village of Sildi, in the Tsumadinsky district of Dagestan, Russia. His father, Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov, was a combat sambo coach and army officer who began training Khabib in wrestling, sambo, and judo from the age of eight. Abdulmanap, who passed away in July 2020, is widely credited as the architect of the grappling system Khabib used throughout his professional career.
Before entering the UFC, Khabib competed in combat sambo at national and international level, winning the World Combat Sambo Championship in 2009. He won the UFC Lightweight Championship in April 2018 and defended it three times before announcing his retirement in October 2020 with a final professional record of 29-0, making him one of very few major-sport athletes in history to retire completely undefeated.
What fighting style does Khabib use?
Khabib's base is Dagestani combat sambo, combined with freestyle wrestling and judo. The combination produces a specific attribute set: a high-level double-leg and body-lock takedown game, an exceptionally powerful clinch, a distinctive sprawl-and-drag counter to offensive wrestling, and the ability to maintain controlling top position under sustained defensive pressure.
In competition Khabib used three phases: closing distance against strikers by absorbing or slipping a shot, securing the body lock or collar tie to control posture, and driving the takedown at speed. Once on the mat, his top pressure from half guard, side control, and back position was described by multiple opponents and coaches as unlike any grappler they had faced in MMA.
The kurtka (sambo jacket) is central to this system. Grip work on the kurtka develops the wrist and forearm strength that Khabib's clinch required. Sambo athletes who drill kurtka grip transitions develop habits that carry directly into no-gi and MMA environments.
The competition-grade kurtka used in FIAS-approved sambo. Grip training on the kurtka builds the wrist and forearm strength at the core of sambo clinch control.

What is Dagestani sambo?
Dagestani sambo is the regional expression of Russian combat sambo that has developed in the Republic of Dagestan over several decades. Dagestan has produced more elite grapplers per capita than any other region in combat sport. The reasons are cultural and structural: wrestling is a community activity from childhood, coaching networks are dense, and athletes cross-train in judo, freestyle wrestling, and sambo simultaneously from an early age.
The technical result is a grappler who can transition between the kurtka-grip clinch of sambo, the tie-up positions of freestyle wrestling, and the throwing mechanics of judo without treating them as separate disciplines. This combination is what Khabib, Islam Makhachev, and several other Dagestani fighters brought into the UFC and used to dominate their respective weight classes.
Of the three competitive sambo formats, combat sambo is the one that most closely maps to MMA. It allows strikes, throws, joint locks, chokes, and leg locks, and requires the full equipment set: kurtka, shorts, sambo shoes, and combat gloves.
What are Khabib's key grappling techniques?
- Body-lock takedown. Khabib circles inside his opponent's guard, wraps both arms around the waist or hip, and drives through rather than pulling. The attack angle comes from his sambo base: he targets the hips rather than the legs, making the defence harder because it requires hip displacement rather than a simple sprawl.
- Cage pressure and dirty boxing. Against the fence, Khabib uses a short collar tie to prevent the opponent creating exit angles, then alternates between short body punches, knee drive attempts, and double-leg shots. The combination prevents the opponent from committing to a single defence.
- Top control from half guard. Once on the mat, Khabib establishes a deep underhook and maintains chest-to-chest pressure that makes space creation extremely difficult. His ability to walk back a failed submission attempt and return to pressure without losing position is a direct product of sambo mat work in top control.
- Back take from scramble. Khabib's transitions to back control from standing scrambles and failed takedown defences are consistent across his career. In sambo, back control is a high-scoring position, so athletes drill transitions to the back from standing as a primary objective.
- Rear naked choke finish. Once on the back, Khabib finishes with the rear naked choke. Of his 13 UFC victories, 8 were by submission, with the RNC the most common method.
What gear do Dagestani sambo athletes train in?
Sambo has a specific equipment list that differs from both judo and wrestling. The kurtka is shorter than a judo gi, cut to allow freer hip movement, and paired with competition-specific shorts and sambo shoes. All three items are required for FIAS-sanctioned competition and are used in training from the earliest levels of the sport. Combat sambo additionally requires open-palm leather gloves.
Low-cut FIAS-approved sambo shoes with a suede sole. The ankle clearance and grip are designed for sambo-specific footwork and takedown entries. Required for competition.
Open-palm leather gloves required for combat sambo. The open-palm cut preserves full grip function, making them the correct glove for sambo-specific grappling entries and ground control.
FIAS-approved sambo shorts in the correct competition cut. Worn under the kurtka and required for both sport sambo and combat sambo bouts.
Can you train the same system as Khabib?
Yes, with one important qualification. The techniques are learnable at any level, but the system requires a sambo-specific training environment: a coach familiar with both the kurtka grip game and the wrestling base, mat partners who can apply resistance, and the correct equipment. Training in a regular judo or wrestling gym will develop adjacent skills, but the specific transitions, scoring positions, and grip habits of sambo are best learned in a dedicated sambo class.
For gear, start with a FIAS-approved kurtka, sambo shoes, and sambo shorts. These three items are the foundation. The kurtka grip work that is central to this system cannot be properly drilled without a jacket in the correct cut and weight. A judo gi is not a substitute: the sleeve length, jacket hem, and collar construction differ in ways that change the grip patterns.
Frequently asked questions
What martial art did Khabib train in?
Khabib Nurmagomedov trained primarily in Dagestani combat sambo and freestyle wrestling from childhood, coached by his father Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov. He also trained in judo. His MMA style combines all three disciplines, with combat sambo as the foundation.
Did Khabib compete in sambo?
Yes. Before his UFC career, Khabib competed in combat sambo at elite level, winning the World Combat Sambo Championship in 2009. His sambo background formed the grappling foundation he used throughout his time in the UFC.
What is combat sambo?
Combat sambo is the competitive form of sambo that allows strikes, throws, joint locks, chokes, and leg locks. It is the sambo discipline closest to MMA in its ruleset and the one that produced many of the UFC's most effective grapplers from Russia and the former Soviet states.
Why was Khabib so hard to take down?
Khabib's takedown defence was built on his takedown offence. Because he understood all takedown entries from the inside, he could read and counter them at speed. His base pressure and hip control also denied opponents the inside position that most takedowns require, forcing them to attempt from disadvantaged angles.
What is a sambo kurtka?
A sambo kurtka is the jacket worn in sambo competition. It is shorter than a judo gi jacket, with a stiffer collar and a cut designed for hip movement and low-body entries specific to sambo. FIAS competition requires a FIAS-approved kurtka in red or blue, depending on colour assignment at the event.
Is sambo available to train outside Russia?
Yes. Sambo is practised worldwide through clubs affiliated with FIAS. In Australia and New Zealand, clubs operate under the national federation, and FIAS-approved gear including kurtkas, sambo shoes, and shorts is available domestically from Sambo Store Australasia.
