While traditional Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is practised without gloves, the evolution of grappling arts and mixed martial arts has created a need for specialised hand protection. Our BJJ gloves, also known as grappling gloves, are designed for the modern practitioner in Australia. They are perfect for No-Gi training that incorporates light, open-hand strikes, MMA sparring, or self-defence drills where you need to transition seamlessly between striking and grappling.
Unlike bulky boxing gloves, BJJ gloves offer a unique combination of protection and dexterity. Here’s what sets them apart:
Whether you're cross-training for MMA or adding a new dimension to your BJJ drills, our collection has the perfect pair of gloves for you. Browse our range and enjoy fast, reliable shipping across Australia.
In traditional Gi and No-Gi BJJ competition and rolling, gloves are not used. However, they are essential for BJJ practitioners who cross-train in MMA, participate in combat jiu-jitsu formats, or practice self-defence drills that involve striking. They protect the hands while still allowing for effective grappling.
BJJ or grappling gloves typically have less padding (around 4oz) and a more pronounced open-palm or separated-finger design to maximize grip for submissions. MMA sparring gloves often have more padding (7oz+) over the knuckles and thumb for greater protection during striking exchanges.
Sizing is generally based on your hand circumference measured around the knuckles. Most of our product pages have a specific size chart to help you find the perfect fit. As a general guide: Small/Medium fits most people up to 75kg, while Large/X-Large is suitable for those over 75kg.
We strongly advise against using BJJ grappling gloves for heavy bag or focus mitt training. The minimal padding is not designed to absorb the impact of full-power strikes and can lead to hand and wrist injuries. Please use 12oz or heavier boxing gloves for any bag work.
To prolong the life of your gloves and prevent odour, wipe them down inside and out with an antibacterial wipe after every use. Never leave them in a closed gym bag. Allow them to air dry completely away from direct sunlight before your next training session.
