Choosing the Right BJJ Gi Weave and Weight

The feel and resilience of your BJJ uniform come down to the fabric's weave and weight (measured in GSM - Grams per Square Meter). Lighter Gis (around 350-450 GSM) with a Pearl Weave are excellent for hot Australian climates and for competitors needing to make weight. Heavier Gis (550+ GSM), often in a Gold or Double Weave, offer maximum durability for rigorous daily training.

      Frequently Asked Questions

For beginners, we recommend a single or pearl weave Gi with a GSM of around 450. This offers a fantastic balance of durability, comfort, and affordability. It's tough enough for regular training but lightweight enough to not feel restrictive as you learn the fundamentals of Jiu-Jitsu.

Sizing can vary between brands, so always check the specific size chart on each product page. The most important measurements are your height and weight. A well-fitted Gi should allow for a full range of motion without being overly baggy, which can give your opponent an advantage.

GSM stands for 'Grams per Square Meter' and indicates the weight and thickness of the Gi jacket's fabric. A lower GSM (e.g., 350) means a lighter, more breathable uniform, ideal for competition or training in warmer weather. A higher GSM (e.g., 550+) means a heavier, more durable Gi that can withstand intense training.

To maximise the life of your Gi, always wash it in cold water and hang it to dry immediately after training. Avoid using hot water, bleach, or a machine dryer, as this can cause significant shrinkage and damage the fabric and collar. Washing inside-out can also help preserve any patches.

Many of our uniforms are IBJJF approved. Please check the individual product description for a confirmation label or tag. To be competition legal, a Gi must be a specific colour (white, royal blue, or black) and meet strict sizing and material requirements set by the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation.
