      The History of Karate

Karate originated in the ancient Ryukyu Kingdom, influenced by Chinese kenpō, and was introduced to Japan by Ryukyuan migrants in the early 20th century. Systematically taught at universities and military bases, especially in Okinawa, it grew in prominence after World War II. Gichin Funakoshi, the founder of Shotokan Karate-Do, is recognized as the father of modern Karate. In 1957, Masutatsu Oyama founded Kyokushin Karate, now known as "full-contact" or "knockdown" Karate.

Today, Karate boasts a global following. Web Japan estimates 50 million practitioners worldwide, while the World Karate Federation suggests the number could reach 100 million. Will you join them?

      Frequently Asked Questions

For your first class, you will typically only need comfortable clothing. Once you commit, the essential piece of gear is a karate uniform, known as a 'gi'. As you progress to sparring (kumite), you will need protective gear, including a mouthguard, gloves, and shin guards.

Karate gi sizing is usually based on height. Each product page has a specific size chart to help you choose. Measure your height and check the chart for the best recommendation. If you are between sizes, it's often best to go for the larger size, as cotton gis can shrink slightly after the first wash.

A Kata gi is made from heavyweight canvas-like cotton. It's designed to be stiff to create a loud 'snap' sound during movements. A Kumite (sparring) gi is much lighter, often made from a poly-cotton blend, to allow for maximum speed and freedom of movement.

Yes, we stock a range of WKF (World Karate Federation) approved protective gear and uniforms. Look for the 'WKF Approved' label in the product description. This gear is mandatory for competing in official WKF-sanctioned tournaments.
